CITY AND MT ROSKILL.
AMALGAMATION SCHEME PROPOSAL BEFORE MAYOR A FURTHER step in the proposed amalgamation of Mount Roskill with the city was reached when the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. Baildon, agreed to place the project before the City Council. The question was brought before the Mayor at the request of a committee appointed by ratepayers of Mount Roskill, which interviewed Mr. Baildon. The first meeting of the new committee was held yesterday under the presidency of Mr. J. W. Shackleford, who was elected chairman. Reporting on the interview, Mr. Shackleford said that Mr. Baildon had stated that the council intended submitting loan proposals to ratepayers for tramway extensions in parts of the city and suburbs, and would await the decision of a vote at Mount Roskill. If the decision was favourable an amount would be included for extension of the lines on Mount Eden and Dominion Roads. ADVANTAGES OF JOINING By uniting with the city, Mount Roskill would have a nlaim and also a vote in determining the loan. The Mayor had also recognised the importance of continuing the concreting of Mount Albert, Mount Eden and Pali Roads. That the committee was not dominated by any party or association was emphasised by Mr. Shackleford. The committee recognised the importance of the district, and the urgent need of tram extensions, progressive road works and drainage, and realised the dang;er of the City Council carrying a tramway loan without providing for the needs of outside districts, and the probability of the reading loan proposals being rejected. It was decided that a petition should be circulated among the ratepayers advocating the taking of a poll on the amalgamation question.
