BABY BORN ABOARD MATAROA ON DAY WHEN TIME IS ALTERED
lITTLIi Joan McDermott really J haan’t a regular birthday. She was born at sea, on the Mataroa, on the day when the time is altered. Her birthday can be either September 22, according to English time, or September 23, according to New Zealand time. Jaan waa made much of by the other passengers, though she doesn’t know it yet. The sum of £lO was subscribed for her in the third saloon and the captain of the IVlataroa presented her with a cup. Wher the ship berthed at Auckland yesterday afternoon both Joan and her mother were in hospital, but perfectly well; Mr. and Mrs. M. K. McDermott, her parents, come from Drogheda, Ireland. Joan may have a second name—it may be Mataroa.
