ST. GEORGE’S TENNIS CLUB
FANCY DRESS SOCIAL A very successful and enjoyable fancy dress social evening was held on Friday evening by the members and friends of St. George’s Tennis Club, Papatoetoe, in St. George’s Hall. The president of the club, Rev. P. C. Davis, presided over a large gathering. During the evening a very happy time was spent in games and competitions, the latter being won by Messrs. Mellsop and N. Orr. Musical items were contributed by Miss F. Trimble and Misses K. and M. Waters. In the president’s speech, congratulatory mention was made of the very healthy financial state of the club. The president also mentioned that the keenness of the members seemed to be on the wane, and the majority of the older members were leaving to join the main town club. He hoped the younger members would join up and fill these vacancies. In conclusion, he congratulated the gathering on the originality of the fancy costumes. The prizes were awarded by the following ladies, who acted as chaperones: Mesdames P. Hill, Abbot, Leonard, Matthews, Snelling, Richards, Morey, Smyth eman, P. C. Davis, Taylor. Wright, and were as follow: Miss Wakelin, as “Superstition,’ won the most original girl’s costume, Miss Grin ter, as "The Harem Lady,” won the girl’s best fancy dress. In the boys’ section, Mr. Rex Taylor, as a “ghost,” won the boys most original costume, and Mr. Smyth eman as “Lord Nelson” captured the boys’ best fancy dress. Among the others in fancy dress were: Miss Leighton, Dutch costume: Miss Richards, Victorian costume Miss J. Orr, nurse; Miss Burrill, Tambourine Girl; Miss Lipscombe, Night; Miss N. Orr, Robin Hood; Miss Trimble, Waitress; Miss Barker, Argentine Dancer: Miss Barton, Gipsy; Miss Smytheman, New Moon; Miss Snelling, Pierrot; Miss Wriglit, Peter Pan; Miss Leonard, Pierrot; Miss M. Smith, Good Luck; Miss Burrill. Irish Girl; Miss Price, Pierrot; Miss Smith, Lightning; Miss Morey, Peacock: Mr. Snelling, Pirate; Mr. Nicholson, English Gentleman; Mr. S. Nicholson, Irish Boy; Mr. Smith, Baker.
