MOUNT EDEN CRATER

KNOWN IN AMERICA Many citizens of Auckland who liv© at the base of one of the most beautiful of the extinct volcanoes of the world, Mount Eden, little realise that the scenic wonders of the mountain are so widely known. Yet that Mount Eden crater was known many years ago in the United States of America is related by a retired Auckland business man who came to New Zealand after spending his youth in the States. While a boy at school he remembers Mount Eden crater being spoken of by his teacher in a geography lesson, and that other craters were nearby. He had not been in Auckland for two hours before he made his way to the top of the mountain. His impressions of the extinct volcano, the first he had set foot on, were vivid and tinged with awe. He expressed gratification that the idea of planting the crater with ferns had been discontinued.
