TO AID UNEMPLOYED
DEVONPORT’S ACTIVITIES LOOKING AFTER THE MEN The question of Government subsidies on money made available for relief of unemployment, was brought under the notice of Mr. Alex. Harris, M.P., by the Devonport Borough Council this morning. A suggestion was also made that the money, £ 100, collected on Friday last by the Devonport Ex-Servicemen’s Club should be utilised for improving Mount Victoria, if the council would revote its offer of £IOO, and the Government: grant £ for £ subsidy. The member undertook to interview the Prime Minister immediately on his return to Wellington. The council hopes to come to a final settlement of the question at its meeting on Wednesday. Eleven men were placed in employment by the council a,t the Stanley Bay Park this morning. The council voted £l2B for the work some months ago, but a Government subsidy had not yet been obtained.
