"NOT ONLY LIBERAL AFTER THURSDAY”
SIR JOSEPH WARD’S HOPE
SPEECH AT NGARUAWAHIA THE only Liberal in the New A Zealand Parliament, Sir Joseph Ward, hopes that, after Thursday, his party will have increased by 100 per cent. He told Ngaruawahia electors in the Raglan by-election so on Saturday evening. Speaking in support of Mr. T. Parker, Sir Joseph expressed the opinion the country could not go on as it was. The past two years had seen a reduction of 5,000 in the number of people on the land, and the nature of exports had sunk by £9.000.000 No one on the land to-day could say he was in a happy position. He said he would help forward any safe Government proposal to give the farmers money to carry on. Their prosperity was reflected in the towns. Electors wanted to ask questions, but the speaker said he could not answer questions in his position. They must be asked of the candidate. An enthusiastic vote of thanks was accorded the speaker.
