Three-Year-Olds and Their Weights

GOOD ONES ENGAGED TO-MORROW At least seven of last season's smart two-year-olds will be seen in action at Ellerslie to-morrow , and in view of their engagement in the Avondale Guineas on Monday a brief review of their form■ and prospects will be considered apropos.

TT is interesting to get handicappers* views on the three-year-olds at the commencement of the season. Mr. McManemin had several of this age to weight for the opening day of the Avondale meeting, and he had little hesitation in placing La.ughing Prince at the head of them.

This Australian-bred horse is in the open sprint at 8.6. Damaris and Thaw

Laughing Prince S 6 Damaris 7 12 Thaw 712 Paganelli 7 8 Covent Garden 7 7 In The Shade 7 7 High Finance 7 0 Doree 7 0 Lorna Doone 7 0

actually this difference between Thaw and the Waikato representative remains to be seen. Paganelli ran some solid races last season. Covent Garden and In The Shade are on the same mark, but purely as a sprinter the former would be preferred, for he is likely to turn out as good as some of the best of Absurd’s getsv In The Shade looks the part, and if he goes on the right way he should do well over middle distances. THREE FILLIES On the minimum are. three smart young ladies in High Finance,, Lorna Doone, and Doree. The first two proved themselves possessed of tons of speed, with High Finance purely a sprinter, requiring much in her favour. Lorna Doone did not appear to recover from a bad cold, for after winning a double at Takapuna she literally “went to the pack." It was a pity, and it is to be hoped that Lorna Doone will make amends this season. Doree, too, has* some pace, and in her two outings at Wanganui, in the best sprint company, she went with the leaders for over fiv© furlongs, covering more ground than was necessary. There is a prospect of Doree contesting a mile classic in the near future, and then we will be able to obtain a better idea of her ability. The following list shows the weights that would have been allotted all the

three-year-olds engaged had they been entered in the open sprint tomorrow :

All the above, with the e> A rption of the Wanganui pair, Daraaus and Thaw, were engaged in the Flying Handicap to-morrow, although Lorna Doone and Doree failed to pay up. Of course, there will be found mary three-year-olds running in hack events at Eller slits this week-end.
