FINAL SPRINTS
MIST O VER ELLERSLIE FEW GALLOPS THIS MORNING A heavy mist hung over the Ellerslie course for some time this morning, effectively obscuring the majority of the track posts as well as the horses. Number two grass track was opened
for fast work, and this was not freely availed of, most trainers preferring to exercise their charges on the sand. In the early morning the six furlong | post could be picked up, and just before breakfast the half mile was visible. Bright Dawn and Ballachulisli, two of W. Stone’s Te Awamutu team, were sent six furlongs on the grass, running to the winning post through the mist in 1.25 4-5 without being extended Both look well for their engagements to-morrow. TRAINED ON THE ROAD Later Day Guard was sprinted .half a mile, moving freely at the end in 55 3-5, the last three furlongs being left behind itn 41 4-5. Day Guard appears to be in fairly good condition, apparently having thrived on the road work that comprised his preparation. . CUP RIDERS The principal handicap race on the programme at Ellerslie to-morrow is the Avondale Cup, run over a mile and a-half. Foster 7 0 Cohesion, R. Reilly 7 0 Mint Leaf, T. Tito 7 0 Queen Arch, W. H. Jones .... 7 0 T. Tito was injured when Miss Hupana fell! at Dannevirke last week, but he soon recovered and was at Ellerslie this week riding work. He will be on Mint Leaf, a sluggish horse that he seems to get more out of than any other rider.
