CAR TAKEN FROM NEWMARKET GARAGE
WATCHMAN’S PROMPT CHASE A motor-car thief was chased from Newmarket last evening, but he eluded his pursuers. THE night attendant at Harrison and Gash’s garage, Newmarket, Mr. A. J. Dotchin, after chasing the thief, scoured Auckland until 11.30 o’clock. He found the car abandoned in Grange Road, off Dominion Road. About 6.30 o’clock Mr. G. E. Gash’s car was standing outside the garage. Mr. Dotchin heard the whirr of the engine and became suspicious. He dashed out of the garage and saw the tail-light of the car disappearing up Khyber Pass. After getting another cair from the garage Mr. Dotchin gave chase, but with a good start and in the traffic the “joy rider” got away.
Mr. Dotchin continued his search round the streets of Auckland until 11.30 p.m., when he found the car abandoned in Grange Road. It was not damaged.
