FINE BURST OF SPEED
SHEIK’S LATEST PERFORMANCE 1924 N.Z. CUP WINNER IN FORM Sheik was looked upon in New Zealand more as a distance horse than a sprinter, but he put up some smarttime middle-distance performances, notably 2min 43sec (a 2.10 J gait) for a place in a mile and a-quarter race. In 1924 he won the New Zealand £3.000 Cup, two miles, in 4min 25 4-5 sec, and he made a place record of 4min 22 3-ssec. At Victoria Park recently he was handicapped on 60 yards behind, which was asking him to do 2min 14sec, and he won in 2min 1 O^sec. He took 7sec to reach the scratch mark. From there it took him lmin s£sec to reach the half-mile and he covered the last half in lmin 3sec.' At the turn he was last, but he unwound a great drive up the long straight and smothered the field, winning from Lynette by a neck in 2min 10§sec.
