Tribute to Duke and Duchess e !

By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.7 a.m, LONDON, Wed.

A N incessant downpour caused tlie Duke and Duchess of York, arriving in Glasgow, to drive in a closed car. It proceeded slowly, to give the huge crowds an opportunity to welcome the Duke and Duchess, who were most warmly received. The Lord Provost, in presenting the Freedom of the City to the Duchess, said he intended to demonstrate the citizens’ appreciation of the Duchess’s service to the Empire. The Duchess, acknowledging the tribute, said a natural pride in her Scottish descent greatly enhanced her becoming a burgess of the second city of the Empire. The Duke, referring to his wife’s in-

terest in social and educational advancement, emphasised the help and success she had given him in his public duty. The Duchess visited the Housing. Exhibition, and toured the stalls, being presented with dolls for Princess Elizabeth.

The whole Labour group, 49 councillors and their wives, were absent from the ceremony.—A. and N.Z.
