Ten Pound Fine for Bookmaker.— Before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, 8.M.. at the Huntly Police Court this morning, Joseph Hewitt pleaded guilty to carrying on the business of a bookmaker, and was fined £lO and 10s costs.
W.E.A. Lecture. —A lecture on Shakespeare’s “King Lear” was given by the Rev. W. Jellie to W.E.A. students last evening. “To read ‘King Lear’ with understanding is to plumb the depths of human life/* said the speaker.
Fire at Otaki. —A fire at Otaki at 12.30 a.m. to-day gutted a fine residence owned by Mr. A. J, Fogden. The house was insured in the Northern Office for £ 000, and the furniture for £l5O. The owner’s total loss above the insurances is nearly £2OO.
Economies Students. —Students of the W.E.A. who have the approval of the director may be admitted to membership of the Economic Society on the same terms as students of the University. An amendment to the constitution of the society was carried at the meeting last evening.
Robbers On Rangitoto.— The Etaingitoto Island Domain Board has cautioned two persons found removing clematis plants from the island. The caretaker has been sworn in as a special constable so as to have authority to prevent spoliation of the Plants. Mr. Henry Howes has been appointed an honorary ranger of the island.
Light War Memorial.— The .Vlayor of Devonport last evening drew Attention to the fact that the Borough War Memorial was in the shade at night, and suggested illuminating it. He mentioned the Scott Memorial in Christchurch. The engineer said the most artistic way would be co floodlight the memorial from below, lights being concealed in rockeries.
Presentation to Superintendent. —On the occasion o! his retirement from the position of superintendent of the PlaT and Recreation Association, Mr. V. S. Pointon was presented by Mr. L. C. Abbott, on behalf of 100 odd boys Present, with a pocket wallet. The Leys Institute Boy Scouts also presented Mr. Pointon, who was their scoutmaster, w ith i gold-mounted tobacco pouch. The new superintendent. Captain West, made eulogistic reference to the work of Mr. Pointon. In reply, Mr. Pointon *a d he greatly appreciated the gifts, »nd assured the boys that they would And a firm friend in Captain West.
