STOCKMEN RESTRICTED BY OTAHUHU COUNCIL
NEW BY-LAW FOR DROVERS “TT^POPULAR” would be a mild term in which to describe the light of which the Otahuhu Borough Council stands in the eyes of local stockmen. Recently the council decided that for every 30 cattle, or part of 30 cattle, driven through Otahuhu, there must be at least one properly-equipped person or drover. The new by-law means, in effect, that for 31 cattle, two men, two stockwhips, two horses and the requisite number of dogs are required. Similarly for 200 cattle, seven men, properly equipped, would require to be with the mob. At the Westfield sale yesterday severe criticism was levelled at the heads of Otahuhu councillors by both stockmen and auctioneers. It was contended that the by-law was unreasonable and unwarranted, and that it imposed hardship. In other parts of Now Zealand two drovers handle quite capably mobs of up to 200 head. The new by-law will affect all cattle sent into the Westfield yards, from which the council draws substantial rates.
