OTAHUHU PROGRESS
ROAD CONSTRUCTION RELIEF FOR UNEMPLOYED That roading improvements in keeping with the general advancement oi the borough of Otahuhu are being well maintained was demonstrated by Mr. Todd, Mayor of this progressive suburb, to a SUN representative Yesterday. The four main thoroughfares, Great South Road, Mangero Road. Station Road, and Walmsley Road, which form a complete circuit within the borough area, have been laid down in concrete, and with these sections down in permanent material attention is now being devoted to the back roads of the borough. A loan was recently raised, for the sum of £ 4,000, to carry out this work, and four gangs of unemployed men were put on the work. One gang, under a foreman, is stationed in each of the roads under repair, and exceptionally good progress is being maintained. The roads at present receiving attention are Hutton Street. Avenue Road, Princes Street, and Luke Street. These are being regraded and metalled, and proper provision i£ being made to cope with the storm water nuisance, which has previously given the council much food for thought. The men who are employed on these works are all married men from the unemployed list. Preference is given to ratepayers, and then residents, and the larger the family the more chance there is of receiving employment. The Otahuhu Borough Council is paying all the men, who number 35, full award rate of wages, and intends to tice every effort to minimise the unemployment difficulty.
