LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN
QUESTION OF RECOGNITION (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The State is not prepared to give general recognition to the Legion of Frontiersmen as a volunteer force subsidiary to the Defence Force. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston, recognises the difficulties in the way of such a course. The Minister has given his assurance that the department sympathises with the Legion, and appreciates its work in the interests of defence, but he considers that it is undesirable to have in New Zealand a military fighting force not under the control of the Defence Department. A suggestion that arms and ma-chine-guns be supplied by the State for training purposes caused the Minister to refuse on the ground that the department has scarcely enough for the training of the existing forces.
