DEVONPORT BOROUGH
VOTE FOR DEVELOPMENT The Devonport Borough Council meeting last evening was attended by Messrs. Aldridge, Mayor, Hislop, Browne, Massey, H. A. Campbell, Enright, W. S. Campbell, Lyon, Eliesdon and .Sheehan. An account for £l2l, the borough’s share of the cost of the recent water supplies commission, was received and the Mayor said if the council did not pay the Government could impound subsidies that would be accruing to the council’s credit. The Maj r or reported that as representative of the council he had attended two meetings which had launched a North Shore Expansion League. The movement would materially benefit Devonport, and the executive had already started on the task of securing the necessary finance. The managing director of the Ferry Company, Hon. E. W. Alison, when approached had met the league very liberally. He considered the borough should vote £2O to the funds. Several councillors proposed making the amount £25, which was duly voted. The pumping plant at Lake Pupuke is now being electrified, and the present staff of steam engineers has received notice of dismissal. A by-law is to be enacted compelling house numbers to be exhibited on gateposts. The engineer reported that the cost of indicating block numbers in the; streets by marking them on convenient power-line poles would cost about £65; numbers would have to be placed on 300 poles.
