CENTRALISED SCHOOLS The committee set up at Ruawai to advance the project of a centralised school for that part of the district, thus cutting out some of the smaller schools and enabling the pupils to receive the more specialised instruction imparted at a large central school, held a meeting on Monday, when it was reported that the deputation which waited on the Auckland Education Board had met with every encouragement. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Otamatea County Council at its next meeting, to be held on the 28th inst. FREIGHT ON BUTTER At the meeting of the Kaipara Chamber of Commerce, M.A Bagnall brought up the question of the freight being charged by the Railway Department for butter from Helensville to Auckland. Representations have already been made by Mr. Hames, manager of the Ruawai Dairy Co., Ltd., who is asking that the freight be reduced. At present the rates charged are: Helensville to Auckland, 35 miles, 19s a ton (in five-ton lots); from Whangarei, 125 miles, 28s 6d a ton. In addition, the Ruawai and Northern Wairoa factories have to pay steamer freight to Helensville. The chamber decided to make representations to the Railway Department and ask that the commercial agent confer with the chamber when he is next in the district.
WAIOTIRA -KIRIKOPUNI RAILWAY Preparations are being made to celebrate the running of the first train to the Kirikopuni station on Saturday next, and an endeavour was made to have either the Prime Alinister or the Minister of Railways present on that occasion, but a letter has been received from Mr. Coates regretting that it was impossible for himself or any member of the Cabinet to be present on this important occasion. An Invitation has now been issued on behalf of the Kaipara Chamber of Commerce, Hobson County Council and Dargaville Borough Council for the Hon. C. J. Carrington to be present. In vitations have also been issued to the presidents of the Chambers of Commerce at Auckland and Whangarei, representatives of local bodies and Mr. W. Jones, M.P. for Marsden. The opening of this section will bring Dargaville within seven hours of Auckland, by motor and rail.
