MYTHICAL MAN
“PHILLIPS OF ROOM 50” ACCUSED WHO TURNED PALE
V\ T HEN William James Courtney, aged 42, told the house-keeper at a city hotel that he was looking for Mr. Phillips, of room 50. he was unlucky in his choice of name. There was no Mr. Phillips .n the hotel, and room 50 was vacant.
Courtney was charg€‘d at the Police Court to-day with stealing an overcoat valued at £ 3 from a bedroom in the hotel. A housemaid said she saw Courtney in the room from which the coat was stolen.
A constable was summoned, and he captured Courtney after a short chase. When the constable, who was in plain clothes, mentioned who he was, Courtney, he said, turned very pale. Accused said to him: “My God,
I’m done—l’m finished—you’ve got me this time.” When witness asked him if he took the coat Courtney replied. “Sure.” Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
