AEOLIAN ORCHESTRA

LAST NIGHT’S CONCERT A fairly representative programme within the capabilities of the orchestra was presented at the Aeolian Orchestra’s third concert given in the Town Hall concert chamber last evening. In the work done general improvement was registered, it being evident that under the dirction of Mr. W. Edgar Webb very satisfactory progress is bing made by this organisation.

Fucik’s “Entry of the Gladiators” provided an appropriate opening number. It was followed by “Poet and Peasant” (Suppe), a piece that, rather worn at any time, has not been improved by being played by almost every musical organisation of note in Auckland during the past six months. Schubert’s “Entr’acte’’ No. 2 from “Rosamunde” was a pleasing contribution, although the orchestra’s most commendable work was in Haydn’s Symphony No. 6 (“The Surprise”), which was handled cleanly and with good tonal balance.

The incidental music to “The Merchant of Venice” (Rosse), Tschaikowsky’s “Valse des Fleurs,” and the “Coppelia” ballet music (Delibes) were also pleasing contributions. Miss Cecilia Duncan’s light but pleasing soprano was heard to advantage in “The Dawn Has a Song” (Phillips) and “Sing, Break Into Song” (Mallinson). Mr. Duncan Black was heard to good effect in “The 131acksmith’’ (Slater), and “Border Ballad” (Co wen) The accompaniments provided by Miss Maida Hooker left little to be desired.
