FOOTBALL NOTES FROM HUNTLY
We shared the fate of other towns in the province on Saturday, and received another wet week-end for the half-holiday. All local Rugby fixtures were off on account of the Peace Cup contest, and the only senior Soccer match was at Hamilton, where Thistle played a drawn game with Frankton Railways. At senior League Waikato (the holders of the Rotohiko Shield) successfully withstood a challenge from Hamilton by 19 to nil. This game took place at Ngaruawahia. Senior League.—The selection of the North Island League reps, to play the South Island chosen 13 has met with great satisfaction in these parts, and two of the Huntly boys, Tom Timms and Stan Rayner, have been included in the list. While it is regretted that Stevenson did not catch the selectors’ eye this time, congratulations are extended to the above named players, who have played consistently good football for their club for a long period. Their showing next Saturday will be awaited with interest, and a large number of local enthusiasts are making the trip to see the match. Junior League. —Considering the state of the ground the match between Huntly and Ngaruawahia was very open, and in winning by 19 points to 13 the former can thank their forwards for the honours, though a couple of solo efforts by Griffiths raised the shouts of the barrackers. The speedy Ngaruawahia back, from his own 25, got away, with Northmore in hot pursuit, and as both are capable of breaking llsec. and are well-known runners, the excitement was intense, but Griffiths just got there, and in addition, another solo from about half-way. The scorers for Huntly were Watkins (1), Watson (2), Jack Whorsky (1) and Rangi (1), the latter and Watkins converting one each. For Ngaruawahia Griffiths (2), Rimmer (1) and two goals by the former was the tall^.
Of the individual players, Peter Raumati at full-back, and Bill Rangi were outstanding in the rear division, and Arthur Baker and Chris. Watson in the vanguard, while the losers’ forwards were all a solid pack of workers, with none really outstanding; but Hill and Griffiths in the backs were conspicuous, especialy the latter, whose play at times was brilliant. Mr. Reg. Woods refereed and his decisions were prompt and impartial. Schools League. Huntly North played Huntly South on the Recreation Ground, and the former won by 12 to 7. For the winners Dave MeNee was in scoring form, and accounted for the whole of the points (four tries), and a coincidence was that
Jack O’Brien did likewise for the losers (one try converted and a penalty goal). For the North, Spiers. McNee" and Brooks were best, and for South Tom Melling. Alan Silich and O’Brien were the pick. Mr. Herbert Rayner refereed. School Soccer. —A matter of pleasing note is that the school Soccer championships for the Webster Shield next year will be held in Huntly. This should be an added stimulus and a big “kick” to local junior Soccer. Huntly A played Glenmassey on the latter's ground and went down by 4 to nil. Marshall (2) and Montford (2) were the scorers.
The Huntly forward line was weak, but were handicapped in being opposed by a heavier vanguard. Bate, the New Zealand rep., was not in form, and Thomas and Fisher were both weak. For the winners Marshall and Montford were outstanding and bore the brunt of the attack. Brown was the pick of the rest.
