HINDENBURGjS BIRTHDAY GERMANY AND THE WAR By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright BERLIN, Sunday. President Hindenburg celebrated his SOth birthday unveiling a typically massive war memorial on the site of the battle of Tannenburg, where 13 years ago the German armies stemmed the Russian avalanche. In the unveiling speech he said: “On this spot I solemnly repudiate the assertion that Germany was responsible for the Great War. Neither envy, hate nor lust -drove us to unsheathe the sword, but the preservation of our existence from a host of enemies. W T e entered the war with pure hearts and waged it with clean hands.” —A. and N.Z.
