“DIARY OF LAST DAYS”
YOUTHFUL LOVERS’ SUICIDE
A “Diary of Last Days” was read at an inquest at Atherton, Lancashire, on two lovers, Annie Critchley, 17, and William Waterworth, 18, who were found dead on the railway. In the diary occurred the following passage in the youth’s handwriting: “I murder A. by taking her to the railway and committing suicide myself. The time has come when we can stand the cruelty of this world no longer. You can call it murder if you like, but at my suggestion Annie and I have decided to avoid it all. It seems the only way to try and find happiness.”
The coroner said the diary and letters indicated that the couple were so self-centred that they were in a state of the greatest morbidity. Verdicts that each murdered the other were recorded. r
