Very heavy rain fell yesterday for the fifth day in succession over the greater part of central and southern England. Floods have occurred at several places. The Thames has risen sft. in two days, and the total rainfall in the last five days largely exceeds the normal fall for the whole of September. In the Avon Valley the rived overflowed its banks and the lower storeys of many houses had to be vacated. Considerable areas of meadowland were converted into lakes.
