FATAL SKID
RAILWAY WORKER KILLED COLLISION WITH LORRY Press Association. CARTERTON, To-day. A fatal accident occurred on the Cross Creek-Featherston Road at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday. Three young men, Reg Hayloclt, a train tester, William Monteith, an engine driver, and IS . Doohan, a labourer, all of whom were employed by the Railway Department at Cross Creek, were returning from Featherston on Haylock’s motor-cycle and side car. Hayloclt was driving, Monteith was in the side-car and’ Doohan on the pillion. When passing a motor-lorry loose metal caused the cycle to skid and turn into the lorry. Haylock and Doohan were knocked off, the former falling between the cycle and the sidecar. It is thought that both men’s heads hit the lorry. They were picked up and taken to the Greytown Hospital, where Hayioclc died at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. Doohan’s condition Is still considered serious. Monteith escaped injury. The inquest on Haylock opens to-day.
