“QUALITY OF MERCY”

MAGISTRATE’S LENIENCY Distressing circumstances were disclosed when the Education Board sought the variation of a maintenance order against a working man, in the Onehunga Police Court this morning. Sergeant Cruickshank explained that the man had a wife and big family dependent upon him, and the maintenance was for a boy in an institution. In a most manly style the defendant had “struggled for a considerable period to carry on, but was finally beaten. Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., had repeatedly suspended the order on account of his disability. The man had managed to pay up to £5, but was now in hospital, where he had undergone severe operations. There seemed not the slightest hope of securing compliance with the order. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., cancelled the claim for arrears, and ordered withdrawal of the order for maintenance.
