BODY RECOVERED FROM WAIKATO
RIVER FATALITY (From Our Own Correspondent) MERCER, Saturday. The body of Joseph Darby, aged 53, who was drowned in the Waikato River, near Mercer, on August 29, was observed floating down the stream at Mercer yesterday and was recovered by Constable Douglas. An inquest was held before the district coroner, Mr. C. K. Laurie, to-day, a verdict of accidental drowning being returned. Henry Gibb, an elderly man, said Darby accompanied him from Churchill to Rangiriri in a small motor-boat. While returning some hours later the deceased overbalanced and fell backwards into the river. They were then in midstream, the river being in Hood. Darby started swimming toward the boat, which was immediately stopped, but he sank from sight when about 15ft. away and was not seen again. The deceased was a native o, Ireland and had no relatives in New Zealand. He was a returned soldier, and at the time of his death was employed as a farm hand by Mr. R. S. Hamilton, of Churchill.
