RETURNING HOME
NEW ZEALAND HORSES THREE ON THE WATER SYDNEY, Friday. The New Zealand racehorses Perle de Leon, Agrion and Philippic, which were withdrawn from all their engagements, are on board the Ulimaroa, which left Sydney for New Zealand this afternoon.—A. and N.Z.
The Open Sprint The defection of Joy King and Shirley from the Flying Handicap left Benzora at the head of affairs. There are 21 remaining in, and there are sufficient speedy ones to ensure a great contest. It is notable that King Lu withdrew in favour of the seven-fur-* longs event. Large Fields Eight out of the 10 horses entered for the Qrrey Lynn Hurdles at the Avondale meeting made the acceptance. In the other events the numbers remaining in are as follow: Maiden Plate, 41 (to be run in two divisions); Members’ Handicap, 20; Gup, 13; Avondale Stakes, 23; Flying Handicap. 21; Swanson Handicap, 20; Henderson Handicap, 25. The average for the eight events is- over 21, a rather phenomenal figure. Southern Performer After the splendid form disclosed by Llandudno at the Great Northern and the Pakuranga meetings, it was expected that he would be given a nomination for the Avondale Cup. However he was entered for the Headerson Handicap, and no doubt if he shapes satisfactorily in this contest he may be allowed to take his chance against the best handicap horses on the second day.
