LAUNCH-LANDING

WHANGAREI HARBOUR BOARD Eleven launch owners and the Whangarei Cruising Club made a request to the Whangarei Harbour Board at its meeting yesterday, that a position at the Old Marsden Point Wharf should be retained as a landing place for launches. The site was much used by holiday-makers and the complete demolition of the wharf would be a hardship, they said. It was decided to set Lip a committee to report to the next meeting. The engineer presented a scale of charges for the board’s slipway, as follows:—A. For vessels occupying a cradle, under five tons weight, 10s for the first day and 3s for every additional day; B. Over five tons and under 10 tons, 15s and 4s; C. Over 10 tons and under 20 tons, 20s and 6s respectively. All labour and attendance found by the board, extra, at the rate of 3s 6d an hour. For vessels on skids or blocks (not occupying a cradle), A, ss; B, 6s; and C, 7s 6d a week or part of a week. The engineer reported having completed the annual survey and overhaul of the grab dredger. Dredging was done at the berths at the Hihiana Canal and at Wigg’s Wharf. Some time was occupied in assembling a floating pontoon line 400 ft in length and removing the whole dredging plant to the sandstone bar section of the Onerahi-Kioreroa Channel. After laying 17 anchors and getting ‘lnto position, the dredging of the material overlying the sandstone was commenced on September 2. The dredgemaster reporting up to September Si, stated that progress, notwithstanding bad weather conditions, had

been good, the material excavated being principally hard shingle and tough mud.

The treasurer reported cash takings for the month to be £1,369 19s 3d. The accounts passed for payment amounted to £1,269 11s 7d, being chargeable to general account. The total cargo handled in the port during the month amounted to 14.803 tons —exports 12.105 tons, and imports 2,698 tons.
