Movie Man Mate
VOYAGE ON SHIPS Actor Obtains t “Atmosphere !” To renew his impressions of life on a sailing ship, Mr. Jack Welch, a movie actor, who was born in Adelaide, signed on as second mate of the fullrigged ship Tonowanda, which reached Sydney last week from the Pacific Coast. Mr. Welch’s parents live in Sydney, ITe went to sea some years ago and earned his first mate’s ticket. His entry into Hollywood began when he went there to superintend sea scenes in famous pictures. Subsequently he took parts in a lumber story and in
“Beasts of Paradise.” For the picture, “Old Ironsides,” he was expert rigger and assistant technique man.
Mr. Welch stated that the present trip was being made to get fresh material for a sea story, in which life on a sailer would be shown. He has photographed many scenes, which will be re-enacted in the studios, where a full-rigged ship will be built.
