During the hearing of a case in the Commonwealth Arbitration Court his Honour Chief Judge Dethridge, said: “I am inclined to think we are a nation of spendthrifts. We are going to be pulled up by a heavy reckoning very soon.” The remark was prompted by counsel referring to Australia s unfavourable trade balance, when arguing the progress of secondary industry in Australia, not accompanied by a decline of imports a.s a result of the increased activity.—A. and N.Z.
