TWICE MARRIED IN A YEAR
BIGAMY ADMITTED WIVES SIDE BY SIDE IN COURT TWO young women sat side by side in the body of the Police Court to-day—they had both been through the marriage ceremony with one man, and he stood in the dock charged with bigamy. The two weddings were solemnised within 12 months of each other, and the first wife was deserted over three years ago. The other woman said he had been a good husband to her. The accused was lan Cameron, alias John Brown, alias John Cameron Brown, aged 27. WIFE DESERTED Mabel Victoria Brown, accused’s real wife, said she met accused in 1923, and they were married at the Auckland Registry Office on July 27, 1923. In January, 1924, her husband deserted her, and she did not see him again until September 7, when he was arrested on a charge of failing to provide her with maintenance. The second wife said, she met accused, when she was a domestic at the Costley Home, where he was employed as a porter. They kept company, and were married at the Auckland Registry Office on July 18, 1924. Brown described himself on the marriage certificate as a wrestler. They lived together happily, and had two children. He had maintained her, and worked all the time that he was well. Mr. J. F. W. Dickson, who appeared for the accused,, entered a plea of guilty, and applied for bail. The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: No, I will not grant bail—think of the injury he has done that girl.
