RACING AT ELLERSUE

THAMES CLUB GRANTED USE OF HEADQUARTERS At a meeting of the Auckland Racing Club Committee on Tuesday last an aplication was received from the Thames Jockey Club foi* permission to hold its next meeting on Ellerslie racecourse. The Auckland District Committee had already approved an application from the Thames Club to race on some course other than its own this year, and also gave approval to the club racing at Ellerslie provided the Auckland Racing Club agreed. The Auckland Racing Club' Committee was given to understand that the Thames racecourse, as now constructed had been condemned as unsafe for racing, and that in order to make the course a safe one it was essential to acquire additional land and generally reconstruct the racing track at ail expenditure of £4,000, which the club would find it difficult, to raise under present conditions. MOST SUIT A 3LE COURSE It appeared that the Auckland racecourse was the on‘y one upon which its meeting could be held to give that measure of success as would be requisite, despite weather conditions, to warrant the club immediately undertaking the work required on Its course, and that if the authority were not granted by the Auckland Racing Club it would probably mean that the Thames Club, which was one of the oldest racing clubs in the province, would become defunct. The club u rged the A.R.C. committee to meet them in the general interests of the sport and help them in the unfortunate position in which they were now placed. The committee carefully considered the position, and feeling that it was its duty in the interests of racing to help the Thames Jockey Club in its predicament and to prevent the tame from becoming defunct, resolved to agree to the application on the understanding that the Thames Club immediately acquires the necessary Innd and embarks at once on the wor.i of remaking its track and putting it proper condition so that there would be no doubt of it racing on its owa course next season.
