CRICKETER’S BAD LUCK FINE FEAT BY HAMMOND By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.57 a.m. LONDON, Wed. The abandonment after lunch at the Oval of the last match of the season robbed the cricket world at the last moment of the chance of a new record. At lunch-time Hammond was 53 not out, bring his season’s total to 2,969. He wanted only 39 to become the youngest ever to score 3,000 in a season, and so join the select band of three-thousanders, of whom Ranjitsinhjl achieved that distinction at the age of 26. Hammond, however, easily gained distinction, securing the highest aggregate for 1927. The match was Lancashire, the champion county, versus the Rest. Lancashire in the first innings made 290. The Rest made 87 for one wicket, when rain caused an abandonment for the day. Holmes had made 60 not out. Play was resumed, and the Rest lost two wickets for 181 — Holmes 61, Sandham not out 53, Hammond not out 53. Rain prevented further play, and the match was drawn. —A. and N.Z.Sui'i.
