ARATAURA’S EXIT AN UNLUCKY JOCKEY Arataura was not a good juniper, for, es stated in these columns on Tuesday list, when reviewing the Dannevirke fields if he did not get over the hurdles he had strength enough to go through. This i id not hold to-day, or perhaps the battens were more solidly constructed, for a bad jump brought about Arataura’s downfall, as a result, of which he had to be destroyed. The All Black —Mrs. Wiggs gelding had shown some promise as a hurdler, following on a lengthy spell after a fairly successful season on the flat, and had v. on four or five races over the sticks since being put to this branch of racing a few months ago. Arataura’s last winning effort was ill the Hack Hurdles at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt meeting on Friday, when he won by 15 lengths from a poor field. Arataura’s rider. Hector Gordon, who received injuries when the All Black gelding fell to-day is a bit unlucky, for he received shoulder injuries when Risk fell with him in the steeplechase at Marton a fortnight ago TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE DOINGS THIS MORNING TRACKS PRESENT BUSY APPEARANCE Though overcast, the weather was line for training operations at Ellerslie tliia morning, ancl some interesting workouts were witnessed. No. 3 grass was freely used, and though slow it had improved a lot since Tuesday. It is still on the dead side, and more fine weather will need to be experienced to bring the track to something like its best order. A large number of horses claiming engagements at the Avondale meeting were exercised on the sand track, and several youngsters were given light exercise on the two-year-old track. Mr. C. O'Connor, the well-known starter, was on a visit to the track, and he officiated at the barrier erected at the mile post on the course proper for the education of two-year-olds, about 20 of whom took advantages of the privilege and from the dispatch galloped three furlongs. The following gallops took place on number 3 grass: War Officer was not bustled to get over five furlongs in 1.14. after leaving the initial furlong behind in 17 2-5 sec. A GOOD TRIAL A good gallop was registered when Huerera, Bally moy 11., Gala Day and Thursbv finished as named in a fivefurlong dash, taking 1.71-5. The first furlong was cleared in 14sec, the first two in 26 2-ssec, and the concluding three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Emerald Kir g in a sprint over half a mile was not. unduly hurried to register 52 3-ssec. for the journey. He left the last three furlongs behind in 39 l-ssec. Serang, who was going comfortably, accounted for Nassock and Brampton in a four-furicng effort, registering 55 sec. The first furlong took 13 3-ssec. Archibald, who has been pleasing in his work, gained friends by covering five furlongs in 1.7 4-5. He was timed to do the last three furlongs in 40sec. Corinax and the Lucullus—Miss Winsome geld: ng ran four furlongs in 54sec, while Royal March got to the end of three furlongs in 45. Star Comet and Abbey Day finished their work by sprinting home three furlongs in 40. A FAIR EFFORT After taking 15 3-5 for the first furlong and 29 for the first quarter, Standfast and Whakarite registered 1.26 4-5 f, ->r six furlongs. The last five were run in 1.14.
