FRUITLESS 300-MILE TRAMP FOR WORK

BANKRUPT’S MISFORTUNES “You had a great deal of misfortune. You certainly seem to have tried hard for work in both islands,” said the Official Assignee, Mr. G. N. Morris, yesterday morning, concluding his examination of Albert Edward Lovett, a NeAV Plymouth butcher. Bankrupt’s creditors were all New Plymouth business people and none was present at the meeting. He OAved £64 to unsecured creditors and had no assets. Lovett supplied a lengthy written statement, in which he said that he was a married man with two children and was 25 years of age. He came to Auckland from NeAV Plymouth in 1923. Entering into a partnership he invested £3OO but lost his money. He then acq’uired a motor-truck and worked as a carrier until July, 1925. He obtained Avork as a butcher in New Plymouth for about 4& months. Returning to Auckland he made every effort to find work. “I then left for the South Island to try the freezing works there,” bankrupt continued, “and tramped 300 miles looking for work, but without success.” Lovett came back to Auckland last February and in March had to go to hospital, for appendicitis. Since coming out of hospital he secured a job as a share-milker earning about £2 5s a week, out of which he had to provide oil-fuel for the milking plant as well as the maintenance of his family. To add to his troubles his wife’s health is in a low state and his youngest child has been in hospital for three months and is likely to be there indefinitely. Lovett said he had no hope of paying his creditors anything. The meeting A\ T as adjourned sine die.
