BISCUIT-WORKERS’ AWARD

WAGES AND HOURS ARBITRATION COURT RULING A new award for biscuit workers has been issued by Mr. Justice Frazer, of the Arbitration Court, as a sequel to the dispute between the New Zealand Federated Biscuit and Confectionery Industrial Association of Workers and Browne Bros, and Geddes, of Auckland, and others. The new award will take effect from September 26, 1927, and continue in force until September 26, 1929. Provision is made for a 48-hour week for male workers -over ’lB years, and 45 in the case of other workers., All overtime will be paid for at time and a-half rates for the first four hours, and double time after that. The following are the minimum weekly rates of wages: Workers in charge of departments, who have served not less than five years at the trade. £5 6s. First assistants, who are competent to take charge of departments where not less than three adult male workers are employed, £4 lGs. Workers operating biscuit-dough brake machines, £4 9s 6d. General hands over 21 years of age, £4 2s. youths under the age of 21 years may be employed at not less than the following rates. First six months, £1 2s 6d; second six months, £1 ss; second year, £1 10s; third year, £ 1.17 s 6d; fourth year, ±.2 7s 6d; fifth year, £3 2s 6fl, and thereafter not less than the minimum rate provided for genera hands. Female workers will receive: First six months, 17s 6d; second six months, £1 Os 6d; third six months, £1 3s 6d; foui'th six months, £1 6s 6d; fifth six months, £1 9s 6d; sixth six months, £1 12s bd; seventh six months, £1 17s; eighth six months, £2 Is; and thereafter not less than £2 4s. Paid holidays shall be Christmas Day, Boxing' Day, New Year s Day, January 2, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, Labour Day. and King’s Birthday. . , Forty-eight hours' notice is to be given by either party of the termination of an engagement, but nothing shall stop the employer dismissing an employee for misconduct. Twenty-four hours’ notice is to be given an employee if required to work overtime, 01 2s tea-money will be paid.
