BEEF MARKET EASIER

WESTFIELD VALUES BIG OFFERING OF SHEEP Ox beef generally was -slightly easier at Westfield to-day. The market opened firm at last week’s rates, but easied slightly as the sale progressed. Cow beef was decidedly easier throughout. An average yarding saw the quality well below that seen at the last two sales. The heaviest yarding of sheep for some weeks saw several pens of newlyshorn sheep. Few big-framed extra prime bullocks came forward, the majority of the offering comprising light unfinished and small-framed cattle. There were no straight lines of exceptionally choice cattle similar to those seen at late sales. Dealers were the principal sellers. A big-framed Hereford beast sold on its own, ex a Northern grazier, topped the market at £l6 12s 6d.. It was got up well for sale, just off good pasture, and was dear buying compared with some other lines which made £1 or so lower. A line of choice prime Shorthorn steers, on account of a Waikato vendor, averaged £ls ss. A mixed line of well-finished P.A. and Hereford steers on account Clifford Allen, Akarare, averaged £l4 6s 3d. Medium-framed prime bullocks on account Taylor Bros., Taupiri, made to £l4 2s 6d. -Small well-finished square-backed P.A. steers ex the Aka Aka swamp, made £lO 12s 6d. Compared with late sales a large portion of the offering of ox beef made under £lO. Light-framed and unfinished bullocks from the Rotorua district made little more than £9. POORLY FINISHED COWS Well-finished big-framed beef cattle in the female section were in the minority. Here, again, dealers’ lines predominated. The greater portion of the offering was light-framed and poorly-finished. Values were decidedly easier on late quotations, though good prime sorts me'; with keen competition. Exceptionally heavy cows on account Taylor Bros., Taupiri, made to £9 15s. Another line of big-framed heavy cows on account J. Johnstone, Manurewa, made to £9 12s 6d. Choice small-framed well-finished Shorthorn heifers made to £9 12s 6d. Medium young cows and heifers made from £ 5 17s 6d to £7. An average yarding of ccrs comprising for the most part small and freshdropped calves sold at values practically on a par with late rates. Exceptionally prime runners made to £ 7 7s 6d. Rough poorly-finished runners made from £3 17s 6d. Small but wellnourished calves made to £1 19 s , small fresh-dropped from 6s.
