Hockey Players in Drifting Launch

FIVE HOUJtf OFF TIRI S.S. KAWAU TO THE RESCUE Members of the Epiphany hockey team had an exciting time on the launch Lancia yesterday'. When off Whangaparaoa engine trouble developed and the launch drifted to a mile of Tiri Tiri, where the anchor was dropped. After a wait of five hours the stranded launch was sighted by the s.s. Kawau on her way from Auckland to Kawau, and towed to a sheltered spot in the Whangaparaoa passage, where the hockey players were landed and the engine repaired., There were five women and fifteen men on the Lancia, members of the Epiphany hockey team. They had been to Matakana, where a match was played on Saturdays, and they were returning to Auckland yesterday morning when the engine of the launch developed trouble. To-day the hockey' players returned to Auckland. They sta.t.ed that they were never in danger, but had the Kawau not sighted them they might have had a most uncomfortable time. Five hours in a launch in the open sea is not pleasant, as some of the stranded hockey players discovered. Captain Olsen, of the Kawau, altered his course as soon as he saw the distress signals from the Lancia.
