Keen Sport at Wanganui

Spirited Contest in Eclipse Stakes

THE Wanganui Jockey Club’s Spring meeting was brought to a most successful conclusion on Saturday. Rain fell during two races, but there was a large attendance and the going in first-class order. The totalisator handled £27,057, making £46,275 10s for the two days, as against £58,701 last year, a decrease of £12,525 10s.

All started in the Debutante Stakes, the' initial two-year-old race of the season, and they were a line lot too. Freehold. from F. Tilley’s Fordell stable was made favourite with £5lB, while there was some support for Silver Rule £344 and Knightlike £228. A fine start saw Mooregas hit the front smartly from Shot Silk, Tea Doll, Australis, Silver Rule and Chit. When they had settled down Shot Silk was making play from Mooregas, Chit, Silver Rule, Knightlike, Tea Doll, Flicker, Banket, Cyrille and Irish Court. Into the straight Chit had headed Shot Silk, with Knightlike close up, and then next in order were Silver Rule, Tea Doll, Mooregas and Freehold next. Once in line Knightlike reached the leaders and then went on to win very easily by a length and a-half from Chit, with Shot Silk three lengths away in third berth. Tea Doll was a good fourth, and was followed by- Silver Rule, Freehold, Banket, Flicker, Australis, Marion’s Birthday, Mooregas, Flying Binge and Second Wind. The winner was responsible for a very smooth performance, after being drawn very wide out, and is obviously much above the ordinary. " Royal Duke fell at the bottom of the straight, and Irish Court came down over him. BRIGADIER BILL IMPROVES Eleven came out for the Gonville Hurdles, Troilus £616, San Pedro £565, Peshwa £306 and Anchor £273 being the best supported. Miss Potoa was the early pacemaker, and showed the way past the stands from Peshwa, Troilus, Brigadier Bill. Anchor, Ramblin’ End, Koauau, San Pedro and Just John, the last pair being Mountain Top and Tawehi. There were many changes along the back, where Brigadier Bill, Koauau, Anchor and San Pedro all got close to the leaders. Brigadier Bill was 'first to turn for home, closely attended by Pehswa, Anchor and San Pedro, with Koauau, Just John, Troilus and Mountain Top next in order. Over the last fence Brigadier Bill held a little advantage over Anchor, and finishing on much better than on the opening day the former scored by a couple of lengths. Just John finished well in third place five lengths further off, and Mountain Top was fourth. Next in order came San Pedro, Peshwa, Troilus, Tawehi, Koauau and Miss Potoa. Ramblin’ Kid was a long way back, but completed the course. NASTORI’S THIRD WIN

Steady rain had set in prior to the Spring Hack, and continued during the race. There was big money for Polydectes £648, and Tea Time £629, with a drop to Vast Acre £417 and Nastori £366. A fine start saw Vast Acre jump away into the lead from Tea Time, Te Kawana, Nastori, Lucky Days, Cione, Reckless, Volplane, and Mon .Desir. Running past the halfmiile Vast Acre and Tea Time were clear of Nastori, after whom were Te Kawana, Lucky Days, Mon Desir. Reckless, Polydectes and Cione. Tea Time was actually first to turn for home from Vast Acre, and following them were Nastori and Te Kawana, and then Polydectes, Reckless, Bronstell and Avro next. Vast Acre was the first beaten, and then Nastori challenged Tea Time, a ding-dong go resulting in Reed punching Nastori home for her third win for the three days by a head. Vast Acre was three parts of a length away third, and Avro fourth. Next to cross the line were Henna. Reckless, Te Kawana, Bronstell, Polydectes, Volplane, Lucky Days, Cione and Onward. THREE-YEAR-OLD TRIUMPHS

All six acceptors came out for the Eclipse Stakes, and interesting betting showed the order as follows: —Grand Knight £867. Reremoana £B4B, Lysander £ 540 and Laughing Prince £ 361. At the barrier Grand Knight, on the inner, got away quickly from Lysander, Laughing Prince, Reremoana, Paleta and Star Stranger. At the six furlongs Lysander was in front from Reremoana, and they were still within a length of each other at the half-mile, with Grand Knight and Paleta in striking distance and Star Stranger well back. At the turn for home Lysander was three-quarters of a length in front of Reremoana. with Grand Knight a length away, just in advance of Paleta and Laughing Prince. Lysander was being hard ridden at the furlong post, where he had Reremoana beaten, but then Laughing Prince put in his claim, and galloping over everything won in very impressive fashion by a length and aquarter from Lysander, who was threeparts of a length ahead of Grand Knight. Paleta was a. length and ahalf away in fourth place, with Reremoana close up. and Star Stranger another four lengths off. A CLOSE FINISH Gilgai £599, The Curragh £579, ILokioi £403, Oneroa £3OO and Mixed Heather £262 was the order of betting in the Taihoa Hack Steeplechase, and the first four were well beaten. Up the straight the first time Mixed Heather had a slight call over Rayo and Gilgai, with Oneroa, Hokioi and Kirkwood next. There was practically no change in the next mile, Hokioi dropping back a bit. At the half-mile Mixed Heather, Rayo and Kirkwood

drew out from the others. Rayo was first into the straight the last time from Kirkwood Mixed Heather, and at the hencoop Mixed Heather and Kirkwood were together, the former winning in a fine finish by a head. Rayo was ten lengths away, and at intervals came Oneroa, Hokioi, Gilgai and The Curragh, with Haeramai a long way back. TRESHAM HEADS ALLOWAY

All started in the Higgie Handicap, Alloway £835 and Bennanee £645 coming in for heaviest support, with money on hand about the chances of Cohesion £444, Tresham £409 and Mint Leaf £392. Joy Bird got the worst of the start, which saw Pantagruel and Royal Game on terms going out of the straight, followed by Bennanee, Shining Armour, Vivo, Cohesion, Alloway, Beacon Light, Imperial Spark, Tresham, Tame Fox, Joy Bird and Mint Leaf. As they went into the back stretch Royal Game and Pantagruel were just in front of Bennanee, this trio being followed past the five furlongs by Vivo, Cohesion, Shining Armour, Alloway, Tresham, Mint Leaf, Tame Fox and Beacon Light. Crossing the top Bennanee ran up to the leaders and was first to turn for home, closely followed by Royal Game and Vivo, with Cohesion, Alloway, Shining Armour, Tame Fox and Tresham their closest attendants. At the half-dis-tance Alloway was in the van, when Tresham appeared on the scene, and with a fast-finishing run collared Alloway on the post to get the verdict by a head. Cohesion was a length away, with Mint Leaf fourth. Next to finish were Shining Armour, Tame Fox, Vivo, Bennanee, Royal Game, Imperial Spark, Star Area and Joy Bird.

CATKIN’S GOOD FINISH A dozen started in the Moutoa Hack Handicap, there being some' even betting, those most fancied being Romantic £641, Bisox £635, Athenry £632, David Garrick £ 510, and the Star God —Catkin bracket £331. Going out of the straight the order of the leading division was Airtight, Athenry, Broad Acre, Tintoretto, Mandarine, Romantic, Bisox and Catkin. As the field went into the back straight Broad Acre drew away and was clear passing the five furlongs from Mandarine, Tintoretto, Athenry, Catkin, Bisox, Romantic and David Garrick. At the half-mile Mister Gamp made a move, and was actually first _ into the straight, clear of Athenry, Tintoretto, Bisox, Mandarine, Catkin and Airtight. At the half distance Bisox was hailed as the winner, but then Catkin put in his claim, and finishing strongly went on to win by a length from Bisox, with Mister Gamp two and a-half lengths away in third berth. Romantic was fourth, and following were David Garrick, Tintoretto, Star God, Athenry. Mandarine and Airtight.

FIRST IN OPEN COMPANY The concluding event, the Owen Handicap, attracted ten runners, and in a big pool Oration wound up favourite, with Covent Garden, Kaiti and Town Bird all well backed. After some delay they got away, Covent Garden dwelling and Gleninnis losing about four lengths. Town Bird was soon in front, clear of Kaiti and Doree, with Oration, Lausanne and Orchid following. At the half-mile Town Bird was about six lengths in front of Kaiti and Doree, but crossing the top the field began to close on the leader. Town Bird turned for home a couple of lengths ahead of Kaiti, with Doree, Oration and Covent Garden next. In the run to the judge Town Bird held his advantage, winning handsomely by two lengths. Covent Garden finished well in second place, a head in front of Kaiti, and Oration was right up fourth. Beaumont and Doree were next.
