MUNICIPAL CONCERT

SATURDAY’S PROGRAMME The Municipal Choir, under the direction of the city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett, was again a decided attraction at the municipal concert given in the Town Hall on* Saturday night. The programme of part songs, ranging from the Elizabethan period to the present time, was chosen with taste, and rendered in a manner tjiat proved wholly entertaining. The contributions were: “When Flow’ry Meadows”; Palestrina’s madrigal, “Ail Hail, Thou Merry Month of May” (Byrd); “Spring” (Rutland Boughton) ; “An Evening Lullaby” (Wilfrid Shaw); “Cargoes” (Masefield); and "John Peel” (West). Infusing artistry and technique into her work, Miss Isobel Langlands, as solo violinist, was given a cordial reception. She chose Bach’s famous “Air for G String,” “Gavotte” (BachKreisler), Scott’s “Lullaby,” and Beethoven’s “Rondino.” for encores Miss Langlands submitted RimskyKorsakoff’s melodious “Hindoo Song.”

Much appreciation was shown of the singing of Mr. Birrell O’Malley, whose delightful tenor was heard in “Yesterday and To-day” (Spross), and “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes.” The organ solos by Mr. Maugllan Barnett were a delightful acquisition to the programme. He played “Concerto” No. 12 (Corelli), “Fantasia in A” (Cesar Franck), “Poco Allegro” (Purcell), and “Star of Eve” (Wagner). Mr. Leo. Whittaker was a capable accompanist.
