DEVONPORT ORPHANS

“ON THE AIR” EVENING The chair at the session of the Devon port Orphan Club on Saturday was taken by Conductor Frank H. CJribbin, i,:io of the foundation members of the c. üb. The rostrum was ornamented with a fine large “loud speaker,” a telephone and a ••mike,” the chairman announcing that IYA was relaying the programme*. The chairman, with his broad smile and genial 4 whisper,” announced the instructions that arrived as "per phone” regarding the relaying ©l’ the programme, and as the evening

wore on frequent rings came to announce that interested friends were enjoying the relay. At one stage the loud speaker was pressed into service while the Auckland Savage Club orchestra was relayed for the amusement of members. At interval time the audience discovered that the elaborate gear was of the “dud” variety; the relayed Savage Orchestra was the club’s own band in an anteroom and that the chairman himself had been “on the programme.”

His ingenuity was not confined to the dummy wireless outfit, for he produced a number of letetrs to “Uncle Frank.” one supposedly from Max Walker concerning “An Ode to Water,” and his fervent hope of some day becoming an orphan; another from Mrs. Ferner dealing with the troubles of the Children's Court and the difficulty of handling “Ernie,” another member of the Bench. Other artists were: Messrs. J. Meldrum, H. Samuel, Wm. Sutton, W. A. Frost, C. Allan, R. Dormer, W. Eyre, W. TJngermuth, and W. Buchanan and C. Marriott. The band’s contributions were: “Pique Dame.” Rubenstein’s “Melody in F,’ : “Graceful Danse” and “Colonel Bogey.” Visitors welcomed included Messrs. Pero Wynyard, S. Cornford. A. G. Frost, R. Jackson, W. A. Bartleet, J. Meldrum, L. W. Cunningham, Mr. J. Boyd (Christchurch), and Dr. Atkinson.
