Big Southern Road Race
A WIN FOR A. A. MORWOOD Over 100 cyclists start€;d from Timaru this morning on the long ride to Christchurch, a distance of 112 miles. The roads were good, but on the early part of the journey greasy patches gave the riders a spattering of mud. A light north-easterly breeze was against the riders. There were few falls, but a fair number of tyres were punctured. The winner, A. A. Marwood, of Papanui (handicap 16m), had a puncture at Temuka, and lost 6m, but joined the 10m handicap bunch and led them along. At the finish nine men entered the Show Grounds together. arid a. desperate sprint over the track for the finishing line ended in Morwood gaining the lead by half a length. Results are: A. A. Morwood (Papanui), 16m, 1; E. A. McKaskell (Christchurch), 43m, 2; L. W. Hill (New Brighton), 10m, 3; K. Lange (Yaldhurst), 20m, 4; J. W. Parsons (Ashburton), 44m, 5. The next to finish were: A. F. Putt (New Plymouth), 33m; E. G. Fuller (Mairehau), 38m; W„ L. Power (Kaiapoi), 37m; R. V. Brookland (Timaru), 25m; R. G. Watson (Oust), 44m; J. F. O’Reilly (Rakaia), 44m; S. Arnst (Christchurch), 20m; R. McGrath (Islington). 20m; A. Mackie (Christchurch), 50m; L. C. Hill (Papanui), 40m; S. A. Jordan (Christchurch), 25m; R, H. Orton (Timaru), 30m; G. Croat (Leeston), 50m; H. G. Watson (Marshland), scr.; J. W. Jordan (Christchurch), 10m. The winner’s time was 6h 14m 15s. The fastest time was registered by H. G. Watson (Marshland), scr., 5h 55m 30s and the second fastest time time by L. W. Hill (handicap 10m), 5h 58m 18s.
A competitor, James Gardiner, of Fendalton, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital yesterday suffering from head injuries received through a fall from his bicycle. His condition is not serious.
