NOTES AND COMMENTS

PROVINCIAL TATTLE UONNIEWAH FOR WELLINGTON Rain again fell during the week, playing havoc with the track, and rendering fast work quite out of the question. In the middle of the week it was almost impossible for horses to i.:et round at a walk, but a few of the more enterprising jogged whenever there was a possible chance. Hard Row to Hoe Black Lila is at present doing her work in saddle, and there is no mist iking her attitude toward this system. The daughter of Child wood is a sweet jacer, hut her past exploits have placed her where it will be difficult for her to achieve success. cl. Phipps has Dick Dillon looking hardy, but it vil! take some time for the son of Kyana—Lou Dillon to get to his best form.

Fino Blood Strain Logan Rothschild is fine, and big, but he still appears to be on the soft side. Coming from such excellent stock, an amalgamation of the Logan Pointer and Rothschild blood, G. Robertson’s pacer should have done a lot better at the racing business. A Country Proposition Th Huia Dillon gelding Horizon is all the better fpr his holiday, and looks in nice condition for serious work. Although he was only successful on ore occasion last season, at Te Aroha, he gave his connections a profitable return, and all being well he will be or deck again when the country circuit is in full swing. Great Ballin, in the same stable, is making satistactory headway, and should come to later on. A Morning Call Bronze Patch was a visitor to Alexandra Park during the week, but he w us between the shafts of a milkcart. After being attended to by shoemaker Lee, the son of Dan Patch— Bronze Bell was re-harnessed to the dairy conveyance, and proceeded about -113 business. Leaving the gate, the fellow cast a longing look at the •rack, and gave a snort which was in"?aded to signify that he would return in a different cart in the near future. The Bloom Is On L Gee is not letting the grass grow under the hoofs of his team, and he is Ki’ing them a good deal of useful <xerci.se preparatory to tackling the serious side of the sport. The Blue Mountain King mare. Maid of the Mountains, is in nice bloom:, and when for the fray may make amends *° r the failures recorded last season. G «tting on the Roll The square-gaiters, Anselin© and Amberite, are jogging along in a con•Jptel manner, and give the nnpres*len that they will be quite all right n tha not distant future. While old Amberite recorded a win for the stable season, the Nut Ansel mare could do any better th in secure a second third * b ut probably will go one Uer during the present year.

Will Go South Great Audo has joined the active brigade at Epsom, but trainer J. Shaw is not asking the son of Great Audubon—Nellie Maxwell any serious questions. He will b© sent South in a few weeks’ time to continue his preparation. Although the chestnut did not get on the winning list last year, he showed sufficient promise to encourage his connections to give him another trial under the colours. Strengthening His Hand The grey gelding Taipare, who raced with a good measure of success last year in Mr. Campbell Johnstone’s livery for W. Willetts, is another that will receive tuition this season from “Darkie” Broughton, at his Te Awamutu quarters. The addition of the grey to the useful string owned by Mr, Wilfred Johnstone will make the exOtahuhu reinsman’s hand a pretty strong one this year.
