EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT FIXTURE

FAVOURITES’ SUCCESS PROMINENT FEATURE OF FINE PROGRAMME (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, Friday. THE Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club held its annual meeting at Wanganui to-day in beautiful weather. There was a moderate attendance, and the course was in first-class order. The totalisator handled £10,657, against £9,921 10s last year, when the meeting was held at Hawera. Speculators had a good day, favourites being in a big majority. EXCITING FINISH Eight came out to contest the Hunters’ Hurdle Race, with which proceedings commenced, and Hangawera was entrusted with £374, compared with the £175 10s invested on Inahman. Hangawera led Grand Lupin, Pink Rose, and Bismoor over the initial obstacle, but at the stands Grand Lupin had assumed the lead, being followed by Hangawera, Pink Rose, Bismoor. and Lady Acre. They closed up a lot in the back stretch, first Hangawera and then Bismoor being in the lead. Pink Rose was slightly ahead as they came to the last fence, but he came down on his nose, his rider making a wonderful recovery. This allowed Hangawera to assume the lead again, but with Bismoor and Pink Rose joining in. A slashing finish ensued, the favourite just getting there by a long neck, Pink Rose a head away, with Grand Lupin fourth, followed by Inahman, Flowing Bowl, and Lady Acre. NOT IN THE BOOK Arataura, who was not even included in the racebook, was a big favourite for the hack hurdles, being entrusted with £302. Others backed were Tawehi £214, and Ramblin’ Kid £142. At the first fence Ramblin’ Kid lost his rider, E. Warner, and Arataura went into the lead passing the stands, seven lengths in front of Miss Potoa, who was a similar margin in advance of Break o’ Day. and Tawehi. Going out of the straight, Killoch pulled up, having broken down. Gold Jinks ran off at the fence at the five furlongs. Arataura was still bowling along merrily in front, and turned for home 20 lengths ahead of Miss Potoa and Tawehi, the favourite finally winning by 15 lengths. Tawehi finished better than Miss Potoa. beating her by a length and a-half, with Break o’ Dav a poor fourth. FAVOURITE BEATEN Of the seven runners in the Maiden, Panther was entrusted with £ 448, and Mussie, £296, was the only other supported to any extent.
