AN ARABIAN NIGHT

CHARITY BALL AT DIXIELAND A HUGE SUCCESS The perfume of Arabia mingled in pungent fragrance from the glow of a thousand smouldering joss-sticks . . . the blue smoke of countless cigarettes curled lazily through the warm air . . . cymbals clashed ... a drum reverberated its call around the room, and saxophones laughed their invitation to dance. The scene was Dixieland . . . the occasion the Arabian gala night organised by Mrs. Alexander Follick for the Auckland Ladles’ Zionist Society, the proceds of which are to be devoted to the Auckland Ladies’ Benevolent Society. From the moment the clock struck eight streams of cars arrived at Dixieland, and by nine o'clock the floor was so crowded that it seemed certain no one else could gain admittance . . . but still they came . . . and were tucked away somewhere. Crowded? Rather! But who cared for a trifle like that? It was a wonderful night, and that was all that mattered. The big ballroom had been decorated with Arabian and Persian rugs and carpets . . . the Dixieland International Orchestra wore the traditional flowing robes of movieland sheiks . . . for all their flowingness the robes could not hamper their cheery music . . . and daintily alluring ladies of the harem flitted silently about with attractive trays of sweets and cigarettes.

Mrs. Alexander Follick seemed to be everywhere at once . . . one moment; she was welcoming a throng of eager folk at: the entrance . . . we looked for her again and found her right at the other end of the room marshalling her forces ere springing some new delightful surprise on the crowd.
