CONTENTS OF MISSING MAILBAG
DID THIEVES KNOW? BUT CHEQUES WERE VALUELESS (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. Were the thieves who stole a mailbag at Frankton Junction during the week-end aware of its contents ? Since the thelt occurred inquiries have been made arid it is now learned that the bag contained a large number of cheques sent from Auckland banks to the V/aikato district. There were between 20 and 30 cheques from one Auckland bank and between 40 and 60 from another. Cheques from other banks were also in the bag. The cheques are quite valueless, however, as they would all have been stamped by the banks which received them. A cheque is always stamped as soon as it is received over the counter of a bank.
When the loss of a cheque is reported it is customary for the depositor to communicate with the drawer and ask that payment be stopped and a new cheque issued. The loss of the mailbag will therefore cause considerable inconvenience.
The theft of mailbags in New Zealand is very rare. This is the first for many years to go astray in thq Auckland district.
