WOMAN HIT WITH HAMMER
SEQUEL IN COURT SHIP’S ENGINEER CHARGED Milroy Thomas Smillie, aged 32, a debonair ship's engineer, was refused bail when he appeared at the Police Court to-day. He was charged with causing actual bodily harm to Sophia Shepherd. Sub-Inspector Lewin said that accused had been keeping company with the woman, who was living apart from her hus banc!. Smillie yesterday hit her on the head with a hammer, said the subinspector, and her injuries necessitated her removal to hospital? At the time of the assault accused was carrying two sheath knives, and threatened to “do for” himself. Smillie was remanded for a week. Mrs. Shepherd returned from South Africa recently, and has since been living with her mother at 56 Wellington Street. Her husband is still in South Africa. Tier injuries are not considered to he serious, but several stitches were put in the wound in her head.
