BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
BEAUTIFYING SCHEME At the meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council held last evening the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, reported that members of the Harbour Board had visited Birkenhead last Tuesday. Ho believed the board would not object to the proposal for building swimming baths on the waterfront near Hinemoa Park, of handing over the roadway nearby to the borough, and the removal of the boat shelters to a more suitable position. It was suggested by the Xorthcote Borough Council that the two borough engineers and the member for the North Shore on the Harbour Board should consider a scheme for making a reserve at Little Shoal Bay. The council does not intend to raise an unemployment loan, but will use the Government subsidy scheme to make improvements at Hinemoa Park. The wages will be 14s a. day. During August 2,500,000 gallons of water was used from Lake Pupuke. which has risen six inches, and is now feet above high-water mark. A special meeting to consider a sewerage scheme has been called for September 19.
