DISPUTED INDENTITY
OLD MAINTENANCE CASE CASE FOR SUPREME COURT maintaining that he had been ordered to pay maintenance to a woman who is not his wife, John William Hope appeared at the Police Court to-day. He was charged with being £l6O in arrears on a maintenance order. Mr. W. X Campbell, maintenance officer, said that the order was made on July 26, 1921, in England. It was registered in Auckland in 1924, but Hope had paid nothing. Mr. J. J. Sullivan, who appeared for defendant, said he was before the court in 1925, and the magistrate was unable to make any finding as to the man’s identity. “Hope still maintains he is not the man,” said counsel, “and I want you to sentence him to a term of imprisonment so that I can get the matter before the Supreme Court. In sentencing Hope to six months’ imprisonment, the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, said:—“ln my opinion this man is simply flouting the court. If there’s truth in what he says, he’s had five years to clear himself.”
