Gallops on Heavy Tracks at Ellerslie

TIMES AFFECTED UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS The rain which fell on and off from 6 a.m. this morning did not help to make things any more pleasant for training operations at Ellerslie. The tracks were on the slow side and became worse as the morning advanced. NO. 3 TRACK FAVOURED No. 3 grass was extensively used, while a fair amount of three-quarter pace work was accomplished on the sand. The following times were registered (on No. 3 grass unless otherwise stated): Carinthia and Modest Boy were sent over six furlongs, the last five of which took 1.13 2-sscc, and the concluding half-mile 60sec. After running the last half-mile in 58sec, Star Comet, Gala Day and Thursby finished as named in a bout over six furlongs, taking I.24sec for the full journey. Serang had a shade the better of it when accompanied by Gold Acre over five furlongs. They ran the first furlong in 13 l-ssec and the five in 1.10. WAR OFFICER IMPRESSES With Abbey Day to assist him War Officer moved nicely to leave half-a-mile behind in 54 2-ssec, the last three furlongs taking 41 l-ssec. Ballymoy 11. appeared to be going easily in a six-furlong gallop. She ran the last three furlongs in 44sec and the last five in I.l3sec. Salamander and Marble Boy were practically on terms after leaving four furlongs behind in 57 4-5. The first furlong was run in 14sec. Brampton, Royal March and Nassock were close together af.er running four furlongs in 56 3-ssec , the last three being accomplished in 43sec. Respirator was allowed to idle along over half-a-mile. He ran the last three furlongs in 46sec. Sleepy Sol and Restaurant were paired off over six furlongs, the last five taking 1.14 2-5. Levenside ran the first three of a six-furlong spin in 43sec, and the full distance in 1.27 3-ssec. Haerera took 54sec to get over half-a-mile, Town Guard taking 58sec for a like distance. Diamond Queen had the best of a six-furlong dash when accompanied by Wyoming, the time registered being 1.25 3-ssec. The first two furlongs were run in 27 4-ssec. and the last half-mile in 57 4-ssec. Judge’s Box and Desert Knight ran the last three of four furlongs in 40 3-5. Vice Versa moved nicely over a round, but was not timed. AUTOMNE MOVING WELL Automne cut out the first two of a five-furlong sprint in 28sec, and negotiated the full distance in 1.10 1-5. Master Doon was clocked to go six furlongs in 1.29 3-5. The last halfmile took 60sec. Cynthia N. was given a gallop over six furlongs. She registered 1.27 4-5. Challenge and Pal-of-Mine were companions over half, a mile, taking I.4sec. THE FOX IMPROVING The Fox moved nicely over four furlongs in 57sec. He ran the last three in 43sec. Royal, a recent addition to G. Henderson’s stable, finished in front of Rapoa over half a mile. They had practically a walk-up start and registered 56 l-ssec. THE JUMPERS Master Noel (A. Rutherford) was schooled over four hurdles. He got in close to a couple but otherwise jumped satisfactorily. Rahepoto (E. Stanway) gave a good exhibition over two hurdles and jumped in masterly style. Te Tahi (A. Rutherford) was given a lesson over a couple of pony hurdles and fenced neatly. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS W. Bagby in addition to other mounts will be riding David Garrick at the Wanganui meeting. Already several riding engagements have been made for the Avondale meeting. These include E. Stanway, Te Tahi and Rahepoto; R. Oliver, Kamehameha; and W. Bagby, Levenside.
